Park-a-Day, Day 001

As part of my volunteer work for POTA, I noticed while doing some data tasks that there were a couple folx who just might have managed to hunt a park every day in 2021. We’ll know for sure in just a few days, as the final logs come in. Thinking about that though, I decided that hunting a park every day would be a pretty darn good goal, so I decided to have at it.

With the insanity that has been the world the last couple years, I also haven’t done much posting, so I figured heck, lets make this a fun little 2022 project, so here’s what’s happening - my goal for 2022 is to hunt at least 1 park every day (UTC day), and secondarily, to try and write a short post about the day’s contact. If you want to play along, feel free - I’ll be sharing updates about it during the monthly POTA updates that I prepare for the various ham-radio media outlets.

with that intro out of the way…

Today’s first contact happened earlier in the morning than I usually happen to be on the radio. 3 of the 4 kiddos were up early, so I figured why not jump on the radio quick. There were a couple false starts as I convinced them that no, you do not in fact need to wake up your other sibling at O-Dark-Thirty. Then the baby needed a couple diaper changes (you know the ones - when you change the diaper, and then the baby poops before you even finish snapping up the new one…) Finally though, I plunked down in front of the radio, baby in hand (as can be seen in the cover photo), and snagged KN4SWS on 20 meters at K-1847. Throughout the day I got a few more ‘insurance’ contacts, so I think day 1 is officially in the bag.

Current Status: 1 for 1.

Oh, and one other thing - because I really needed another project, I put a repeater on the air. I blame the Ham Radio Workbench Crew. Details are available at https://n3vem.com/repeater/
