Minimalist game day 2

1/2/2018

It's day 2 of the minimalist game at my house.  That means my wife and I each found 2 things to get rid of today. For my contribution, here are the items that are getting added to the pile:

1 box from The Road Atlas for Palm OS and 1 box from Game Essentials for Palm OS. Is there still a Palm Pilot around here somewhere too?

minimalist game day 1

My wife and I have been on a mission for some time now to create less trash, eat real foods, and be more intentional with how we think about certain things.  In that thread, we decided to play the minimalist game this month.  The idea is to get rid of 1 thing on the first, 2 things on the second, 3 things on the 3rd, and so on.

If any of these things are things you think you'd be interested in, and you're willing to pay for the shipping, just drop me a line, otherwise at the end of the month it will all be headed to Goodwill / Art of Recycle / Lancaster Recycling Drop-off Center / Some other worthy, not-trash, cause.

With that thought in mind, here is day one for me:

This one really burns me, because it's basic math!
Lets do an imaginary scenario, that even kids would understand.  Let's pretend that you have 12 cupcakes - they are all your favorite type, favorite icing, etc.  the only difference between these cupcakes is that 6 of them are bigger than the rest.
Picture
Let's now say, that you were told you can choose 4 cupcakes.  Well duh - who wouldn't pick 4 that are among the biggest?!

Well, there's a catch.  There is another difference after all - some of them have a different colored paper wrapper.
Picture

Nothing else is different, so it would seem to still make sense that you just pick 4 of the biggest.  But for some arbitrary reason, society decides that, no, you can only choose from cupcakes with yellow wrappers.  You end up stuck with a little cupcake because some of the big ones were removed for no apparent reason.  How is that fair?
Apply this to whatever injustice you want.  Make up whatever excuses you want about why "its not that simple", but at the root, it really is this basic.  Stop picking inadequate cupcakes just because they have the "right" wrapper.
Here is someone much smarter then me, speaking much more elegantly than I can, on the subject that has most recently fired me up about cupcakes:

Sincerely, X

Introducing Diversions

Well hello there.

If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you're among the first to stumble into this space.  2 years ago I started writing a blog about ham radio (and I'm still doing it!) but sometimes there are things that are important to me, that I'd like to share, that have NOTHING to do with ham radio.
As a fan of the 100 Watts and a Wire Podcast, something that Christian said really resonated with me - we are more than just hams.  Part of the hobby is just talking to people.  Sometimes its about important things, sometimes it's funny things, and sometimes its sad things, but they are always human things.  In keeping with that idea, I decided to set aside a separate place on my website that is for the human stuff.  That's my way of saying this section of my website will NOT be about ham radio (mostly.) If you're here strictly for radio talk - go to the main blog section of my site.  If you're into the human side of things, this area might give you some insight into what makes me tick, what things I'm involved in outside of ham radio, and  what things are important to me.
There is not hard and fast plan for this section of the site - I may post regularly at times, and I may go silent for weeks on end.  I'm not doing this just to cause you frustration - I'm doing it because I want this to be organic and real - not forced.  If I find I have a lot to share, I might schedule posts more regularly, but for now, I just plan on sharing what comes to mind, as it occurs to me.  At times I might even offend you, but I assure you, this will never be my intent!

Thanks for stopping by!

Many of you know me from my ham radio hobby.  In reality however, we are more than hams.  This space is dedicated to things that aren't the norm for my blog - it is a space for random thoughts and opinions about things that are important to me, but have nothing to do with ham radio.  If you don't dig it, feel free to click away, but if you do enjoy it, you might get some insight into what makes this ham tick.
